news feeds sept 22

Months of questions and criticism have come to an end over Mitt Romney's sketchy tax past. Well, sorta. In the report from his accountants, they managed to sum up Mitt's tax returns from 1990 to 2009 on one page. Pretty succinct? Or does it leave out key information? You can probably guess which. It didn't deal in actual dollar figures either, showing just the percentage of tax paid based on his gross income, not once coming in under 13.66%. Pretty good. But a senior exec at the Tax Policy Centre says that the gross income claimed by Mr. Romney just included US interests and didn't take into consideration overseas investments (Mitt's are thought to be fairly substantial). The wealthy use tactics such as this to reduce their adjusted gross income and the resulting owed tax. When asked for a more detailed tax statement, the campaign said it would not provide any numbers or any comparison of tax paid to TOTAL income. Should be fun times leading up to the election, and remember SNL's political Weekend Update prime time show is back on Thursday nights leading up to election day and here is the only clip (from CNN) that hasn't been taken down by NBC (CLICK HERE)

iPhone 5 came out. I think it did ok. There was a 800 person line at Apple's glass cube store in New York City, and the first in line at the Apple store in Toronto had been there for almost three days. The phone features a slightly bigger screen and is 4G LTE wirelessly compatible (don't know what that is), so I guess that's good. The phone will still be available in a week folks and you won't have to sleep on a floor and smell of B.O. and mall coffee. And that's if you are lucky enough to have your Apple store actually inside. Anyways, all tomfoolery aside, the phone looks great. Thinner, sleeker and the processor is apparently a hell of a lot faster. I'm sure I'll get one eventually… if only something would happen to my lowly 4S!

Men are from Mars.. I've heard that before. Richard Branson is thinking about the next step to make that an actual reality. The billionaire adventurer told several news outlets that he hopes to start a community on Mars. "Obviously, you are going to want scientists initially. You're going to want physicians, you're going to want comedians, you're going to want fun people, beautiful people, ugly people -- a good cross-section of what happens on Earth -- on Mars. People have got to be able to get on together, because it's going to be quite confined." He believes that in his lifetime that a population could develop on Mars, which at 62 and his crazy income should have a good hundred years left with blood transfusions, titanium bones and such. He actually might be closer to being a superhero than anyone alive. Richie's private space tourism firm plans to offer two hour rides in space for the price of $200,000 in the year or so. Great first date!

The OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp) is proposing on building the largest development in Canada, a facility that would include restaurants, retail and convention space as well as the casino. The key point of the pitch I think is that only 10% of the building will be used for table games and slots, and that 12,000 jobs could be created with a total capital expenditure of $2 billion and change. Paul Godfrey, former Blue Jays President/CEO called the facility "a once in a generation opportunity." Godfrey wants the site of the new project to be on the waterfront but sees many areas in the GTA that are equally viable sites. An Ace Rothstein moment (Discrection advised!)

If you have been watching the news the last couple days you might notice that Mayor Ford has went down to Chicago to improve business ties between Toronto and Chicago, as well re-new that sister city thing we have with them. Not sure what that makes us. Anyways, CP24 in particular followed Ford closely in Chicago, and I have to hand it to them, they didn't Robby look too much like a jackass, and even though I don't agree with a lot of what he does, Chicago is a great city and we should improve business ties with them. The press in Chicago was less than impressed, and with the cities first teacher's strike in 25 years coming to an end, neither the Tribune or the Sun Times reported mayor's visit. One writer from NBC Chicago, who was clearly unimpressed, offered up the following headline for his article which I'll link to below "BIG, OBNOXIOUS TORONTO MAYOR VISITS CHICAGO, BLENDS IN TOO WELL" (actual headline; read HERE)

A twenty five year old bonehead in the Bronx, NYC jumped out of a monorail car above a tiger cage in the Bronx Zoo (not Yankee Stadium). At about 3pm the man let out of the car above the tiger exhibit clearing its perimeter fence. The man suffered multiple puncture wounds while the tiger was 'playing' with him. The tiger pen is equipped with a 'hot wire' which emits a small electric shock to the animals as a way to keep them out of areas with plant beds and other foliage. The man, under instruction from zoo staff, rolled under one of these wires which probably saved his life. The man was conscious and speaking when being taken away by paramedics, although he is in critical condition. It was a tiger cub and considering a tiger could rip your face off, despite the size, in about 2 seconds nothing bad will come of the animal since he was probably just toying around. "I think it's safe to say that if the tiger really wanted to do harm to this individual he certainly had the time to do it," said zoo director Jim Breheny.

funny hockey

Well, the lockout is officially on. It happens. Check out this short "Clark the Canadian Hockey Goalie" from around the last lockout. It's about a goalie playing on a baseball team… Hilarious. And YouTube happens to have one of my favourite hockey videos from the late 80s, "NHL: The Lighter Side." Pretty funny stuff and sure brought back a lot of memories for me!

I had a fun summer! But I only got a couple days of non-city summertime in the woods which is far too little. And early September is the salad days of summer so it barely even qualifies, but fortunately there was a bit of an indian summer up at Killbear Park on Georgian Bay, just North West of Parry Sound. I have been there probably about 25 of my 32 years… at minimum, possibly 27-28 and if I can make it happen I'll continue to do it every year. The park is about 3 hours north of Toronto, a bit quicker than I remember growing up thanks to the highway construction that has been going on since I was 5 is finally past the exit to the park. It's 4340 acres of sandy beaches, smooth granite rock faces (Canadian Shield!), pine tree covered tiny islands, sandy bottomed lagoons and picture perfect sunsets which is a nice backdrop to a nightcap on the beach.

Last week, the water was so warm compared to the air that in the AM there was a thick fog over the glassy smooth water. There are over 800 campsites, all near the water, and is killer for swimming, hiking, cycling, fishing, and boating. There is over 200 sites that have electrical hookups but to get the real experience don't use electricity. That goes against the whole idea. There was a family who put a Shaw satellite dish out on the beach that hooked up their motorhome that was roughly the size of the ACC. That's pretty bogus. I'm sure they had some kind of antenna for cell phones as well, since there is no cell service at the park. My phone was in airplane mode for three days and was used solely as a camera. Probably nullified my warranty since it has to be full of sand. It isn't all pinwheels and whistles though, you have to be cautious as well, since the park it aptly named. Well, not aptly named, but there is bear in the name and there is tons of bears there. I have seen a bear on my campsite (probably 5 years ago) climb a tree in about a second so don't leave food out, leave the perfume at home and don't go to sleep in a tent with chips. Bad choice! Anyways,  Killbear. Those who know, know, and if you try to go up there in June or July without a reservation you will be turned away. Quite busy, but still an extremely well kept secret in Ontario, just a stones throw from Toronto! Here some pics from last week, and for interested parties the park has a website HERE.

quick update september 20

Remember the rock star US snowboarder with the huge Sideshow Bob style hair? He had a little too much fun at a hotel in Nashville over the weekend. Shaun White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism after allegedly smashing a phone, assaulting a hotel employee, trying to flee in a cab and doing some kind of Jackie Chan spin kick to another hotel employee, missing, then falling on his head. He seems to be a touch better human being when there is a board under his feet. He could have Marty McFly'd it on a skateboard and held onto the cabs bumper, but he didn't. He spent the night in jail before being released Monday evening.

Baby bikinis. Are they over the line, asks CNN. Umm… ya, they are.

Well, since everyone is talking about Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's boobs I might as well too. The royal family is up in arms over topless photos of Kate published in a French magazine last week, and again this past Monday in an Italian magazine. Now Dutch and Swedish magus have bought the photos and plan to run them over the weekend. "It's a set of unique photos from an A class celebrity. We are a leading gossip magazine in Denmark, and it is my job to publish them. If the British royal family want to sue us, then it will happen then and we'll deal with it," said Kim Henningsen, editor of Dutch rag-mag Se Og Hor. I heard she looked pretty good and I would have a peek if I was presented them… She is pretty gorg.

Awesome.. this is what the world needs. Lance Bass says that he would love a NSync reunion to happen. As it turns out he is not the only one, no one returning his call since his phone was cut off six months ago. Everything has been coming up Bass lately though as he just launched his own satellite radio show "Dirty Pop with Lance Bass" and thinks that the constant discussion by fans (who??) about a reunion leave him feeling semi-optimistic about one actually happening. I'm pretty sure Bass was the boy band member who wanted to go to space but they wouldn't let him. I don't care to actually look it up. Oh, about the space thing. They sent a monkey into space and couldn't send you… do the math.

Been watching alot of Peep Show.. should have been watching it much sooner, but just finished the first four series in about as many days (also may explain a lack of posts) so check it if you haven't!

McDonald as captain of the Rockies

RE: The NHL lockout. The are enough reasons for any Maple Leafs fan, even the most optimistic, to be upset over the entire state of NHL hockey in Toronto.  The Maple Leafs haven't iced a quality team since before the lockout and have had a handful of decent teams (notably the early 2000s two final four appearances and a division title), and obviously the Dougie years which featured two straight final four appearances, but basically the team has been terrible since the they shipped star and fan favourite Lanny McDonald to the hapless Colorado Rockies in December 1979, also my birth year and month so I feel at least cosmically responsible (the deal also made Darryl Sittler turn in his captaincy and want out of T.O). But with the team failing to reach the playoffs between lockouts, I don't think the team has ever been in worse shape. No real identity and no direction. I stopped getting Leaf tickets two years ago since I was sick and tired of paying a couple thousand dollars for two seats 10-12 games in the upper bowl and then leave disappointed every time. Last year was the first season in years where I just said no to the prices, not that I'm being a cheap screw but if you aren't going to ice a decent team (or a downright embarrassing team sometimes) I don't know how you can justify raising the prices at the ACC that 1% every single season, especially when you easily lead the league in team revenue. Last year I got my puck fix at a handful of AHL games and not once did I come away feeling cheated. And that all I ask… you can lose, just don't be pathetic. Some Leaf analysts are insisting that the lockout may be a great thing for the team giving their core of younger talent another year of maturation. Well the lockout isn't good for anyone involved. The players, the fans, the workers at rinks all around the NHL, hell the parking lot guy. Oh and the perception that both the owners and players are greedy pigs isn't helping. The NHL has made great strides in the US market since the last lockout and all that good work could become undone since a lot of Americans are much more casual fan (speaking in generalities of course - check out the fans in Boston and Philly to name a couple hockey crazy cities) they will simply just tune into something else. It is the opposite to the baseball lockout in Canada, where casual fans turned away (two years removed from winning a World Series in Toronto no less) and haven't ever come back. The difference is baseball can survive without Canadian support, I'm just not sure that the NHL can survive without that of the United States... SO JUST PLAY HOCKEY

How successful is the iPhone? Very. Remember that computer company from the nineties that had some kind of products involving Windows, Offices and Points of Power? They were doing good, and by most companies standards they are quite successful, having grossed $73 billion dollars in revenue. But then you see that the  iPhone itself has made more money by over a billion dollars than the entire Microsoft corporation as a whole, grossing a whopping $74.3 billion dollars by itself. And how is the Windows phone doing? They send for a priest on the launch date and it never recovered. Below is the classic commercial for the first Macintosh personal computer circa 1984.

Don't mess with Texas! Intolerant rednecks rejoice! I'm just joking.. Stereotypes. I'll go back to my igloo. Anyways, the Texas Transportation Commission approved an 85mph speed limit on a toll road between Austin and San Antonio. It is now the highest posted speed limit on any road in the United States, passing (rapidly) a stretch in the state of Utah. "We look forward to opening this segment of SH130, which will help reduce congestion for the Austin-San Antonio corridor by providing Texas drivers and other with an alternate route for traveling through our great state," said Mark Cross, a spokesman for the Texas Department Of Transportation. It will open in November sometime.

cOk, the Red Sox are done. This season was written off with blockbuster trade that sent most of their healthy line up to the Dodgers and the continuing rumours of Bobby Valentine's dismissal. Boston's first choice for his replacement is current Blue Jays manager and former Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell, who was mobbed by reporters before his Jays opened up a three game series at Fenway. So, since the unloaded $257 million in salary, Gonzalez being the only player in the deal I was genuinely bummed about leaving, I thought I'd go through some free agents that would look pretty tight in Boston come next season. But first, we can hold onto catcher Jared Saltalamacchia, second basemen Dusty Pedroia, outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Cody Ross, and hopefully Big Papi David Ortiz will want to stick around with the new players I got in mind for him. Current first baseman. James Loney's contract is up after 2012, but he's a good player and would glad to have him back, particularly since the first base free agent pool is pretty shallow. Jhonny Peralta's deal is up this year, though the Tigers hold a 6 million club option, but former Red Sox shortstops Alex Gonzalez and Marco Scutaro will also be available. At third base, and I like Will Middlebrooks, but I can't help but notice that Youk's contract is up at the end of the year and the club option is $13 million. Will the White Sox pony up the dough, or can Kevin come back to Boston? Need to pick up another outfielder, and I have no problem with Podsednik being the fourth outfielder but with talent like Josh Hamilton, Grady Sizemore, Delmon Young, Juan PIerre, BJ Upton and Curtis Granderson (though the Yanks will pick up his club option.. count on it) hitting the open market it would be tough not to look at any of them. Hamilton is the obvious choice for everyone, but my dark horse is Grady Sizemore, who when healthy (a big if unfortunately) can be a game changer any night.  Pitching. Lester and Bucholz are beauties, but the rest of the rotation doesn't look good. Well, how about luring Zach Greinke or Jake Peavy to Beantown.  Here is my Red Sox opening day roster:

C Jared Saltalamacchia
1B James Loney
2B Dustin Pedroia
SS Jhonny Peralta
3B Kevin Youkilis
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
RF Cody Ross (if he resigns!)
LF Grady Sizemore
DH David Ortiz

Starting Rotation: Zach Greinke, Jon Lester, Jake Peavy,  Clay Bucholz, John Lackey

Red Sox in 2013!

I've had a rough 2012 sports wise. Not fixing to get any better come fall with the inevitable lockout.. Not looking good. Well, here's some salt in the wounds for Toronto. The Maple Leafs have been ranked the worst team in North American pro sport. The categories in which all the major sports leagues were judged on included 'fan relations,' 'ownership', 'affordability', 'stadium experience' and 'title track record', the last category rates on the likely hood of a championship in any one fans lifetime. Not good. The highest ranking NHL team? The Tampa Bay Lightning. Weird…
