Brutal news for anyone who listened to this guy. No Use For a Name frontman Tony Sly has been found dead at the age of 41. The Bay Area punk band formed in 1987, with Sly joining in 1989 when he was 18 years old. The following year they released their debut album "Incognito" on New Red Archives. In 1992, the band put out "Don't Miss the Train," also on New Red Archives which refined the band's hardcore debut into a much more accessible punk sound, leading to the band being signed to then-new San Francisco label Fat Wreck Chords, owned by NOFX frontman Fat Mike. They released an EP "The Daily Grind" in 1993, but finally achieved some mainstream success with their Fat full length debut "Leche Con Carne," with the track "Soulmate" being Fat's first ever video to receive regular airplay on MTV. The following album added future Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett on lead guitar, and that lineup put out two great follow up albums "Making Friends" and "More Betterness." In the new millennium, the bands popularity waned a bit with decent but uneven records like Hard Rock Bottom, but Tony's solo career has been doing most of the talking recently anyways. He released two split albums with Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape, as well as putting out two of his own albums. The last No Use For a Name album was 2008's "The Feel Good Record Of the Year." Dominic Davi, formerly of Tsunami Bomb and Love Equals Death said "He was very down to earth, encouraging and mellow. He was just a class act." Ex-tourmate of Tony's, Karina Denike of the Dance Hall Crashers said "All my heartfelt wishes go out to Brigitte and the girls. Heartbroken over the loss of a dear friend, wonderful musician and lovely guy." Fat Wreck Chords broke the news issuing the statement "It was with great sorrow that we must say goodbye to Tony Sly of No Use For a Name. We received a call earlier today of his passing, and are devastated. We have lost an incredible talent, friend and father - one of the true greats." Fat Mike added "One of my dearest friends and favourite songwriters has gone way too soon. Tony, you will be greatly missed." Here are a couple pics I took at a Warped Tour some time ago and some of my favourite No Use For a Name songs:
